Electric Counterpoint (1987) is a work by Steve Reich for electric guitar, multiple pre-recorded guitars, and bass guitars, originally written for Pat Metheny. Structured in three connected movements (Fast – Slow – Fast), the piece employs canons, phase-shifting and repetitive rhythmic cells, from which new resultant melodies emerge as the layers overlap. Today it is regarded as one of the most iconic and frequently performed minimalist works for guitar of the late 20th century.
